Training on UB-Lab during the W.A.T.E.R. Summerschool
The second W.A.T.E.R. summerschool took place in Oostende, Belgium, from October 2nd to 6th.
This workshop offered different lectures in important topics related with measurement techniques in fluid mechanics, such as experiment design and error analysis, optical techniques (e.g. PIV: particle image velocimetry), acoustic techniques (e.g. UVP: ultrasonic Doppler velocity profile meters).
14 participants from 9 countries came together to learn or deepen their knowledge about measurement techniques and experimental research.
The lectures have been led by Prof. Margaret Chen (Vrije Universiteit Brussels, Belgium, and summer school organizer), by Rui Aleixo (co-organizer, University of Bologna, Italy) and Prof. Massimo Guerrero (University of Bologna, Italy), by Prof. Rui Ferreira (University of Lisbon, Portugal), and by An Ruidong (State Key Laboratory of Hydraulics and Mountain Rivers Engineering of China, China).
Laboratory sessions were proposed to demonstrate the measurement techniques presented in the lectures. The purpose of the practice was to measure in the wake of a cylinder placed in the middle of the flume. PIV measurements were carried out by the participants with the assistance of Frank Michaux from ILA, Germany. UVP measurements were made with the assistance of Marie Burckbuchler (UBERTONE, France) using the UB-Lab measuring through the wall of a flume thanks to its suction cup transducer holder.
On Wednesday, a visit to the Flemish Marine Institute Simon Stevin Research Vessel was organized. The ship built in 2014 is used by researchers in different domains in Belgium. It is equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and instrumentation, from sediment, water and plankton samplers to Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP).
After the examination on Friday, the W.A.T.E.R. Summer School participants went to visit Bruges, a Belgian city registered on the UNESCO world heritage.
