Preliminary laboratory studies on microplastics’ mobilisation in open-channel flows
Arianna Varrani is a young researcher at the dept. Hydrology and Hydrodynamics of the Institute of Geophysics at the Polish Academy of Sciences.
This year, she presented a project entitled "Preliminary laboratory studies on microplastics’ mobilisation in open-channel flows" for the UVP Springboard Call for Projects launched by Ubertone. This project was our "coup de coeur" winner for its ecological aim. The proposed project deals with the transport of small plastic fragments in streams and rivers, specifically the study of the conditions initiating microplastics’ transport at the stream bed and their deposition, which is essential for modelling and forecasting of fragments’ fate into fluvial systems.. Thus she got a UB-Lab P at her disposition in her laboratory for 4 months.
On Thursday 29th of December 2021, she presented her work, entitled "Incipient motion of small plastic particles: experimental design and expected results", at the IAHR Young Professionals Congress 2021.
This congress took place remotely and we recorded. Dr Arianna’s presentation can be watched on youtube.
